Aviation industry experts outline challenges to the growth of air travel at global summit During the centenary year of the first commercial flight, leaders of the global aviation industry meet in Geneva for the Global Aviation Summit to discuss the challenges the next century will bring This year marks the 100th anniversary of commercial airlines. Since that first flight in 1914, airlines have carried over 65 billion passengers. Based on current growth trends, the next 65 billion will take flight before 2030. It's an extraordinary rate of growth for any industry and will yield significant economic benefits for economies worldwide -- particularly in the emerging and developing world where much of the growth will take place -- but that growth comes with significant environmental challenges.
