Politicians and church leaders - past and present - were at the funeral of Bishop Edward Daly to pay tribute to him.
Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and Irish President Michael T Higgins attended - as did many other politicians and prominent church figures.
Former Church of Ireland Primate, Archbishop Robin Eames, said Bishop Daly was "a man in those dark days was an inspiration - a man who brought a determined opposition to violence and a determination to build for the future.
"There was a great mutual understanding between us - and I thank God for that."
Former SDLP Leader Mark Durkan said Bishop Daly provided inspirational leadership in very difficult times.
'He stood foremost against justice and completely against violence in all it's forms," he said.
Stephen Pound, the Labour MP for North Ealing in London - who travelled over for the funeral - said Bishop Daly was "an incredibly, extraordinary and utterly unique man."
