The iconic Big Screen at Belfast City Hall looks set to be taken down.
A unanimous decision was taken at Friday's Strategic Policy and Resources Committee to remove the big screen.
It is understood councillors took the decision for financial reasons as the screen needs about £100,000 worth of upgrades and only has planning permission until 2019. The decision has to be ratified by full council next month.
Launched in a blaze of publicity in 2011 amid claims that it would help bring people from a divided city together to watch sporting events, the Big Screen has failed to attract the crowds expected.
SDLP councillor Declan Boyle said: "We just don't have the climate for outdoor TV."
