Video: Excitement as Rory McIlroy swung by Belfast's Mencap centre

World golf superstar Rory McIlroy paid a visit to the new Belfast Mencap Centre on Wednesday.

The centre opened in March this year thanks to a £500,000 donation from the Holywood golfer's Rory Foundation.

The £1.7million centre serves as a model for Mencap’s early intervention services across the UK and Ireland and was also funded by the Big Step Forward Appeal, learning disability charity Mencap NI’s most ambitious fundraising campaign in history.

At the heart of the Mencap Centre is the Mencap Children’s Centre, a nursery for two to four year olds with a learning disability, autism or developmental delay.

During his visit, the world number two took part in a tour of the nursery and a meet-and-greet with Mencap families.

Margaret Kelly, director of Mencap in Northern Ireland, said: “It was so exciting to show Rory around the Mencap Centre today and I know all of the children and families in attendance loved meeting him."
