Alderman Jim Rodgers has become one of the few people to have held all three of Belfast's highest civic offices when he was sworn in as the new High Sheriff at a traditional ceremony at the City Hall.
He has previously served two terms as Lord Mayor (2001/2 and 2007/8) as well as being Deputy Lord Mayor in 1997/98.
"I am delighted to be appointed to this position and will do all in my power to make sure that I carry out all my duties in a highly efficient way.
"It also gives me the opportunity to meet a wide range of people from all walks of life and I intend ensuring that this great city of ours continues to move forward," he said.
The first High Sheriff was appointed in 1900 with the primary rle of protecting the monarch's interests in the city, but the role is now largely ceremonial.
