"The use of violence for political objectives hasn't worked in the past and certainly won't do in the future."
That was the vow of PSNI Chief Constable George Hamilton, speaking at a Press conference following the attempted murder of police officers on the Crumlin Road in Belfast on Sunday evening.
One officer was seriously injured in the attack.
Mr Hamilton said the officer appeared to have been shot three times in the right arm.
He said he had undergone three hours of surgery last night and was expected to have further surgery this week. He is in a stable condition.
Mr Hamilton insisted the PSNI would be "relentless" in their pursuit of those responsible for the attack.’
