Alliance Party Leader Naomi Long has warned that the suspension of the Assembly will cause a serious crisis in public finances.
Speaking after a meeting with Secretary of State James Brokenshire at Stormont on Wednesday, she said: "In the last 24 hours we have identified a number of issues which could lead to a serious crisis in our public finances if the Assembly is unable to address them because of the suspension we are heading towards.
"These are serious issues which will have an impact on every household in Northern Ireland.
"We have made it clear to the Secretary of State, that while an election may be unavoidable, he will need to take emergency legislation through Westminster."
The Alliance leader was also scathing of the DUP and Sinn Fein.
"We have seen our government behave like a squabbling couple seeking a divorce who throw the head up, walk out and leave their children with no bread and water," she said.
