Video: Pastor James McConnell - Trial begins over 'satanic Islam' sermon

Pastor James McConnell arrives into Belfast Magistrates Court for his landmark freedom of speech case.

The 78-year-old preacher has been charged under the 2003 Communications Act with making "grossly offensive" remarks about Islam.

His defence witnesses include MLA Sammy Wilson, Father Patrick McCafferty, and the Muslim Cleric and Academic Dr Muhammad Al-Hussaini. The latter spoke out against stifling academic freedom of speech before entering court," The need to protect academic freedom and the religious freedom to debate, to discuss and to criticise religious ideas at a time of rising extremism is possibly one of the most important things in our juncture in history."
