Belfast Harbour Police parading for duty in front of the Harbour Office, 1921.
The Belfast Harbour Police force was established in 1847, making it the oldest existing police force in Ireland, and one of the oldest in the British Isles.
The Belfast Harbour Police has full constabulary powers along with special powers granted through the Harbour Commissioners’ bye-laws.
They are totally independent from the Police Service of Northern Ireland.
The Harbour Police are responsible for all aspects of maritime and port security and are also responsible for the implementation of the International Ship and Port Facility Security code.
The harbour estate is constantly evolving, and even though BHP are the oldest force in Ireland they have moved with the times to police a dynamic and changing environment.
