The SDLP are not prepared to see a DUP-led government replaced with a Tory Party-led government in Northern Ireland.
SDLP leader Colum Eastwood was speaking at Parliament Buildings ahead of a meeting with Secretary of State Jame Brokenshire.
The SoS is meeting all the main parties in a last-ditch effort to see if some agreement can be reached which would stave off an election.
Mr Eastwood said: "Northern Ireland is not as British as Finchley. We have moved way beyond that.
"The people of Ireland voted for the Good Friday Agreement and if we cannot secure these institutions - and we should do everything to ensure that can happen - the people of Ireland want to see nationalists here protected."
