This year marks the 80th anniversary of the original Queen Mary, the liner that heralded a new era of luxury ocean travel in the post-depression 1930s.
Eighty years on, Queen Mary 2 sailed into Southampton Water alongside fleet mates Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria following one of the most significant refits ever undertaken by Cunard.
Later in the day she set sail for New York on her first transatlantic crossing following her extensive five week remastering in Hamburg.
Many of the refurbishments to QM2 have taken their design inspiration from the art deco era of stylish ocean travel.
But did you know the Queen Mary 2 is longer than the Shard is tall? Or that she boasts the world’s first planetarium at sea? Or that Queen Mary 2 and her predecessor the Queen Mary has carried everyone from Elizabeth Taylor to Winston Churchill?
