Thursday has seen some of the highest ever temperatures recorded in Northern Ireland, with some roads even starting to melt in Co Antrim.

BBC NI weather supremo Barra Best has confirmed that temperatures have now reached 30.1C in Thomastown, Co Fermanagh, 0.7C below the highest temperature ever recorded in Northern Ireland.

It is Ireland's hottest day since 1976 with temperatures reaching 32C at Shannon Airport, while temperatures of 29C were recorded across Co Down and Co Fermanagh.

Meanwhile DUP South Belfast MP Paul Girvan has said that it has gotten so hot that roads have begun to melt in Ballynure, South Antrim.

Translink trains have also been slowed down by the increase in temperature.

Speed restrictions have been implemented from 2pm on Thursday across the NI Railways network.

“This is a precautionary measure in order to mitigate any potential risk of the rail expanding which could result in travel disruption," a Translink spokeswoman said.

"Passenger information is available on the Translink website or through our social media channels. We apologise to our passengers for any inconvenience”.

The spokeswoman explained that as the mercury hits 30 degrees the rails are typically hotter and can expand.

She said a speed restriction "allows us to manage this issue and minimise any travel disruption for our passengers".

The good weather shows no signs of stopping with the Met Office saying tomorrow will be dry, sunny and very warm. Sea breezes are expected around the coasts keeping conditions a little fresher with maximum temperatures around 28C.

The weather is expected to staying dry and settled over the weekend and into Monday. There will be plenty of sunshine expected and it will remain very warm. However, a cloudier start is possible on Sunday.
