It’s not every mum in her 30s who can dance in her pants on stage and not feel or look ridiculous — but for Michelle Barclay it is simply part of her job.
The 36-year-old from Newtownards, who is mum to seven-year-old Amy and five-year-old Alexa, has been whisking audiences into a frenzy with her fantastic tribute to the chart-topping clubland singer Cascada.
For Michelle, who has been a professional singer with the four-piece cover band Impact for 10 years, launching her tribute act last May has added an exciting new dimension to her career.
Cascada has become a best-selling dance superstar since she topped the global charts with her debut single Everytime We Touch in 2006. One of her biggest anthems, Evacuate the Dancefloor, famously kept Michael Jackson from the number one spot in the UK after his death.
Michelle has put in many hours of vocal training and dance rehearsal to emulate the star’s high-energy performances.
And she confesses that for her it is pure escapism: “It is fantastic to go out of your comfort zone and change your personality to someone else’s.”
”Cascada can be very glitzy, which is not something you get to be every day, so it is fun to dress like her. She is known for going on stage in just her pants. And yes, I have done it and I know it is probably a big ‘no no’ for a mum in her 30s, but I keep in shape and it’s all part of the act.”
Talented Michelle has recorded as a session singer with local music producer and DJ Micky Modelle and was thrilled when one of her songs was recently aired on the TV show Hollyoaks.
“By pure chance they choose the song White Wedding, which I had recorded for one of Micky’s Irish Clubland albums and a friend called me just before Christmas to say that she had heard me on TV. It was a big thrill to turn on the TV and hear yourself sing.”
Michelle adds: I have the best of both worlds as my job fits in brilliantly with being a mum.”
